I will vote to ban hunting with hounds

Many people have contacted me about animal welfare issues. Firstly I need to say that I am very disappointed that the Conservatives have decided that there should be a vote to bring back hunting with hounds.

It was the Labour Party that brought in the hunting ban and should a vote beheld in the House of Commons to bring back hunting I will vote against this.

Labour has a strong record on animal welfare and I firmly believe that we should lead the world with high animal welfare standards in the wild, in farming and for domestic animals. Enforcement will be essential so Labour will increase the maximum sentence for those convicted of committing animal cruelty.

We will promote cruelty-free animal husbandry and consult on ways to ensure better enforcement of agreed standards. We will also prohibit the third-party sale of puppies, introduce and enforce a total ban on ivory trading, and support the ban on wild animals in circuses.

We will also cease the badger cull as the evidence suggests that it actually spreads bovine TB. Instead few will focus on interventions that have a scientific basis in order to prevent the spread of this disease.
